Reflection on a Famous Quote – August 27, 2012, by Danny J. Stevens

“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble; it’s what you know for sure that ain’t so.”

~ Mark Twain

We grow up absorbing or values and beliefs from our support group around us. These values and beliefs may or may not be valid or may be out of date for the current times. One belief is that these beliefs and values are inherited from other generations. Often we operate under a set of guidelines such as values and beliefs. We may not have had the opportunity to meet the person who originated these thoughts. I first heard of memes from Dr. Wayne Dyer. He speaks about these mini programs, viruses like in nature which multiply and can affect our thoughts and actions. You can read more, by visiting Wikipedia on Memes or a book by Richard Brodie, “Virus of the Mind”. These memes can be out of date or in a different viewpoint. Prejudice is a meme and similar to what Mark Twain was writing about, something that you know for sure but is not in the right perspective! Examining your thoughts and actions you may find several areas where this is occurring. The good news is that these memes can be altered once you become aware they exist. The bad news is that you can spread these memes like a virus to those around you.
