Reflection on a Famous Quote – January 27, 2012 By: Danny J. Stevens

“20 years from now you will be disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the one’s you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” -Mark Twain

I have at least that amount of time to reflect on. Am I disappointed by things I didn’t do? Yes! I am disappointed I did not play sports. I wonder what I missed …by not enlisting in the Armed Services. I wonder what it would be like to have a wife, an ex-wife or children. I did not regret joining the marching band,

I did not regret spending approximately twenty plus years in service to the Department of the Defense as a contractor supporting the Navy, Marines, Army and Army Corp of Engineers. I have met wonderful friends, been a big brother to some and tried to be open and helpful to all.

I do believe that it is not meant for us to be disappointed by the choices made. These are defining moments in our life, which make us who we are. The pains of regret are like the forge; melding us and forming us. The results can either be a bitter, angry and disempowered soul , or it can create someone who can learn from the items still unresolved in their past. To use the quote of Mark Twain again, “…So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover!”
