Reflection on a Famous Quote – March 13th, 2012, Quote, by Danny J. Stevens

“Our Life is frittered away by detail… simplify, simplify!”

~ Henry David Thoreau

I have noticed that it is so easy to through yourself in to making things work that before long you have created a stress filled situation.  What was intended to help you reach your goals has now become something which has captured your attention.  While we concentrate and work thru the stress life is happening.

Having been in this situation more than once, I can attest to a number of things that don’t happen while being focused on the detail.  Take time to participate in life on all levels.  Some things are just not that important.  Looking back I put all my time in to my career expecting returns.  Instead of creating the same loyalty from the company when your become expendable your history.  While giving my all to this pursuit I did not see what I was missing.   I lost time with a wonderful pet that passed before my job did.  A parent had a stroke, another became ill.  Potential relationships also passed.   If I had taken time and worked at creating a life, there would be more to show than a few lines on a resume.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once remarked about Thoreau’s quote, that one simplify would have been sufficient.  We should go to work because it is something we love.  It should be something we are willing to trade our life for, because you are trading at least 8 hours a day or more.  Learn to hear the symphony that plays near the silence.  Smell the fabulous perfume of the trees, grass, flowers or enjoy nature.  Learn to be present and appreciate your love ones.   Enjoy the magic of life that occurs each and every day!
